Brief History
The Nursing and Midwifery Training College is located in Goaso Municipality in the Asunafo North Municipal in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. The College was established in 2010. The school runs Registered General Nursing, Registered Midwifery and Post NAP/NAC Midwifery programs.
The college has a student population of 1,070 and a Teaching Staff of 25 and 73 Non-Teaching Staff.
The organizational structure is headed by a principal and assisted by the Vice Principal and one dean of students. The structure has a Finance Department, Administration Department, and Catering Department.
NMTC Goaso started as a Post-Basic Midwifery Training institution with a student population of forty-three (43) through the relentless efforts of the Municipal Chief Executive of the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku, the Omanhene of Goaso Traditional Council, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah I and other opinion leaders.
The idea of establishing the school was conceived when the Municipal Assembly, Hon. Alhaji Doku and the Traditional Council realized the high maternal and infant mortality rate in the Municipality in 2010 and took pragmatic measures to curb the menace.
This rate was quiet alarming, so they mooted the idea to start a Midwifery Training School to train young girls to become Midwives so that mothers can access quality maternal services during antenatal, labour and puerperium.
A petition was consequently sent to the Ministry of Health and the Nursing and Midwifery Council for their approval. The response from the M. O. H. was positive, as the Municipal Chief Executive was given the green light to start the Post Basic Midwifery Training. As a result, Hajia Halima Opoku Ahmed a seasoned midwifery tutor was called from Berekum NMTC to be the first Principal of the school.
The school was officially opened for admission on the 10 of December 2010 at Goaso in a 2-unit classroom block near the Presbyterian School. The school benefited from the support of some organizations, such as IMEC, and JHPIEGO which are all non-for-profit organizations. They made donations of medical equipment to the school to furnish the skills laboratory.
The Catholic Diocese of Goaso through the benevolence of His Lordship Bishop Atuahene also released a hostel at the pastoral center to the first batch of students for 12 months since the college did not own a hostel.
The institution since its inception has carried out its core duties conscientiously and has achieved immense success in the training of students. Our students’ performance in Licensing Examination organized by the Nursing and Midwifery Counsel of Ghana has progressively increased from 80% passes in our maiden exams in 2012 to 100% in 2016, and 95% in 2022.
The College has also expanded in terms of students’ strength, programs and infrastructure. Aside the Post-basic midwifery programme, which was initially introduced, additional programs have been added.
Registered midwifery (RM) was introduced in 2014 and Registered General Nursing (RGN) in 2016. Currently, the student population is 1,072. There are 469 Registered General Nursing (RGN) students, 568 Registered Midwifery (RM) students, and 33 Post NAP/NAC Midwifery students. In total, there are 174 male students and 896 female students. There are 25 teaching staff and 53 non-teaching staff.
The school has won many laurels in sports competitions organized in the Ahafo Region amongst Nursing Training Colleges.
Special mention is made of our former Post Basic Midwifery(PBM) student, Christiana Tawiah, who emerged as the overall best student in Ghana in the Post NAP/NAC category in the Nursing and Midwifery Council exams organized in 2021.
