Registered midwifery (RM) was introduced in 2014 and Registered General Nursing (RGN) in 2016. Currently, the student population is 1,072. There are 469 Registered General Nursing (RGN) students, 568 Registered Midwifery (RM) students, and 33 Post NAP/NAC Midwifery students. In total, there are 174 male students and 896 female students. There are 25 teaching staff and 53 non-teaching staff.

The aim of the program The aim of the program is to produce midwife who would practice midwifery in any sector of the community. The professional midwife would have acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes to recognize the total health needs of the individuals, families and communities and participate effectively and efficiently in meeting those needs.

Objectives of the program/ scope of practice

By the end of the program, the student midwife will be able to:

1. Obtain medical and obstetric history and conduct physical examination

2. Use the midwifery process to assess, diagnose, treat and evaluate care of the mother and child during pregnancy, labour puerperium

3. Promote and maintain an environment which assures physical and mental wellbeing of mother and child by reassurance of mother, child, family, group, and community; promote and maintain physical hygiene and physical comfort; care and cleanliness of all midwifery equipment and sterilization of surgical equipment

4. Provide pre-conceptual care

5. Provide pre-natal and family planning services

6. Monitor progress of pregnancy, identify and manage minor disorders and medical conditions of pregnancy

7. Provide intra partum care; monitor progress of labour, identify complications and refer to higher level of care

8. Provide post-partum care; monitor progress of puerperium; identify and manage post-partum complications or refer when necessary

9. Prevent complications relating to labour and puerperium by performing episiotomy, suturing first and second degree tears or episiotomy and administration of local anaesthetic/ anaesthesia

10. Perform emergency life-saving procedures including augmentation of labour, vacuum delivery and manual removal of placenta

11. Provide child care including resuscitation and examination of new the born (head to toe); promote breast feeding

12. Monitor reaction of mother and child to disease condition, trauma, stress, medication and treatment

13. Provide care for mother and child in obstetric emergencies; and refer complications of pregnancy

14. Recognize abnormal obstetrical conditions and seek prompt medical intervention to a higher level of care/ Registered practitioner

15. Administer medicine used in midwifery to mother and child and monitor its effects

16. Educate and counsel individuals, families and communities to prevent maternal and infant morbidity and mortality

17. Promote antenatal and post natal exercise

18. Administer and monitor supply of oxygen to the mother and child

19. Maintain fluid, electrolyte and acid base balance of mother and child

20. Improve and maintain the nutritional status of mother and child

21. Promote effective communication between care givers, clients and significant others

22. Ensure infection prevention while carrying out clinical procedures

23. Prepare and assist surgical operation, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for mother and child

24. Ensure wound healing by dressing of operation and other wound removal of stitches/ clips and drainage tubes

25. Keep accurate records of all activities or interventions performed on mother and child

26. Obtain specimen for diagnostic investigation (blood, urine etc.)

27. Advocate for mother and child to obtain optimum quality health care

28. Collaborate with other health personnel to provide care for mother and child

29. Identify training needs for students and staff and impart knowledge, skills and principles of reproductive health to meet those needs

30.   Provide administrative leadership role/ support in management of health care units within the framework of the national health policy

31. Plane and coordinate the use of supplies and services

32. Administer medication ordered by a Registered Medical Practitioner e.g. oral and rectal administration, intramuscular and intravenous injections, application for eyes, ears, throat, vaginal urethral, and skin; administer bay inhalation but not anaesthetic except in the presence of a Registered Medical Practitioner

33. Initiate research, share relevant research findings and provide evidence-based practice

34. Notify births, maternal and neonatal death and conduct maternal neonatal death audit

35. Care of the dying and a recently deceased patient in accordance with midwifery standards

36. Care of a still born infant and dead neonate

The scope of practice for The Registered Midwifery at the basic level therefore shall be as outlined above.

The aim of the programme The aim of the programme is to produce polyvalent nurse who would practice general nursing in any sector of the community. The professional nurse would have acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes to recognize the total health needs of the individuals, families and communities and participate effectively and efficiently in meeting those needs

Objectives of the programme/ Scope of Practice

By the end of the programme, the student midwife will be able to:

1. Use knowledge acquired in the principles of homeostasis to meet patients’ needs by monitoring vital signs of patient and their reaction to disease conditions, trauma, stress, anxiety, medication and document.

2. Administer prescribed medication to patients

3. Use the nursing process as a professional tool for meeting the total health needs of patients, families, and communities by planning, diagnosing, treating and evaluating care

4. Demonstrate skills and abilities for imparting knowledge and principles of health to student nurses and patients by participating in the teaching of patients and mentoring nursing student

5. Contribute to, and promote primary health care services in the community; recognize, manage and refer clients/ patients where necessary

6. Plan and carry out health education based on identified health needs of the community by teaching and counseling individuals and group persons

7. Demonstrate administrative and leadership capabilities in managing health care units within the framework of the national health policy

8. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional action by documenting and maintaining accurate and relevant intervention

9. Assist in generating knowledge through research and making use of evidence-based research findings

10. Demonstrate understanding of national policies and their relevant to nursing

11. Demonstrate ability for continuous professional development and life-long learning in a changing society

12. Coordinate the health care activities provided for the patient by other categories of health care providers

13. Demonstrate and apply entrepreneurial skill in nursing and midwifery

14. Incorporate the use of nursing informatics in the of patients and the analysis of data generated to improve care outcomes

15. Observe and report behavioral changes in patients

Post NAP/NAC

A diploma in the subject of midwifery enables a student to fully engage with the ancient art, science, and practice of pre-and post-natal care for women and children.
